]]> Between June 5th and 9th, the 15th Kino Otok – Isola Cinema international film festival will bring to Izola, Slovenia, a fresh selection of independent author films, discussions on film and recognisable guests from all over the world. For the 15th time, the film ties will also emerge through the cheerfulness and the enthusiasm of its festival team. An international team of volunteers with more than 70 members is a guarantee for networking that opens the door wide to new cooperation in Slovenia and abroad, while generations of festival workers successfully transfer their practical experience obtained at Kino Otok into their professional careers.

We invite everyone who loves film and would like to undergo informal practical training in the field of organising film and cultural events to joins us and build an unforgettable film experience with us.

We offer you experience in an international environment, a possibility of completing obligatory practical training, socialising with established international filmmakers and new friendships. We will provide you with the knowledge and the skills that will enable you to initiate and carry out similar projects and programmes in the field of culture, education and youth work, and at the same time, we would also like to continue our cooperation in the following editions of the festival.

In its fifteen years, Kino Otok has spontaneously developed into a space of informal practical training. We devote special attention to including interested people in the form of mentored practical training in the numerous areas of festival organisation and the related cultural and educational programmes of the Otok Institute. We cooperate with numerous organisations like universities, youth centres, student clubs and cultural societies. We also encourage international cooperation of peers from Slovenia and abroad.

In a pleasant work atmosphere during the festival, our mentors will assist you in numerous areas of:

  • taking care of international festival guests,
  • managing festival venues and logistics,
  • managing the festival camp,
  • photo and video documenting of the festival,
  • Submarine – Otok for Kids, the film-educational programme for children,
  • and more.

A month before the festival, we will also be glad to receive your help at distribution of promotional  materials.

The daily presence in Izola is necessary from June 4th until June 10th. During the festival, we offer you:

  • accommodation in the festival camp,
  • meals,
  • a festival pass affording you free entrance to all festival venues in your free time.

]]> On Friday, 15 March, an international meeting of film education experts will take place at the Manzioli Palace in Izola, providing many opportunities for knowledge enrichment and experience exchange. It is intended for pedagogues and film education professionals from the Primorska region and beyond, but also for all who believe in the power of European cultural connections. We will host five film education specialists from Spain, Germany, Lithuania and the UK – representatives of our partner organisations in the Moving Cinema project. Otok, Institute for the Development of Film Culture has joined the project’s 2018–2020 edition.

The two-year project fully titled Moving Cinema: Methodologies, Strategies and Tools for Young People to Appreciate Cinema and Become Active Spectators is one of only eight projects awarded support for film education within the MEDIA sub-programme of Creative Europe. The project’s activities are intended for young people aged between 12 and 18 and their main aim is to create or strengthen the links between teenagers and European auteur cinema, both at school and in their leisure time.

Programme of the international meeting:

  • 9.30: registration & good morning coffee
  • 10.00–11.30: public presentation and discussion

In the first part of the meeting, we will be joined by Núria Aidelman and Mireia Canals (A Bao A Qu, Spain), Jon Echeverria (Kijufi, Germany), Gintė Žulytė (Meno Avilys, Lithuania) and Yvonne Gordon (Centre for the Moving Image/ Edinburgh International Film Festival, UK). The presentation of the project and the partners will be followed by a public discussion with all the participants of the meeting, especially regarding the introduction of film education in the school system.

  • 11.30–12.30: snack break & socialising
  • 12.30–15.30: workshop for pedagogues and film education professionals

One of the important special features of Moving Cinema is its emphasis on film language as a means of expression with an incredible power of developing creativity in any area and on any topic. That is why part of the project’s methodology is to offer pedagogues and film education professionals an opportunity to become – for the first time or again – enthused by the seventh art by way of simple exercises and thus gain a positive experience they will want to impart to the young. The workshop on ‘light and faces’ will be led by guest experts and is suitable for teachers of all school subjects.

]]> It was precisely six months ago, when the charming Mediterranean town of Izola waved goodbye to the 14th International Film Festival Kino Otok  – Isola Cinema. For twenty June days we intertwined the Izola programme with festival happenings in Ljubljana, Koper, Idrija, Tolmin and Sežana. United in a unique community, we once again successfully realized the idea of a critical and inspiring cinema island. The audience, filmmakers and festival workers jointly enjoyed the thrill, annoyance or awe when watching the films, as well as learn, network, dance, gaze at the stars, or stay up for the sunrise at the seaside. What is your favourite memory of the 14th Kino Otok? Are you already tempted to create new ones?

A new calendar year is just behind the next wave. As we are heading towards it, we share our excitement for the jubilee 15th Kino Otok edition in 2019 with some feedbacks and numbers that  marked the last edition. Celebrate with us!

We invite everyone who loves film and would like to undergo informal practical training in the field of organising film and cultural events to joins us and build an unforgettable film experience with us.

We offer you experience in an international environment, a possibility of completing obligatory practical training, socialising with established international filmmakers and, last but not least, new friendships. We will provide you with the knowledge and the skills that will enable you to initiate and carry out similar projects and programmes in the field of culture, education and youth work, and at the same time, we would also like to continue our cooperation in the following editions of the festival.

In its thirteen years, Isola Cinema has spontaneously developed into a space of informal practical training of young people, which is our answer to the current socio-economic situation. We devote special attention to including young people in the form of mentored practical training in the numerous areas of festival organisation and the related cultural and educational programmes of the Otok Institute. In addition to the festival, we organise film screenings and workshops for children and youngsters throughout the year, and various events commonly named “On the Island” with Slovenian and international partners. We cooperate with numerous organisations like universities, youth centres, student clubs and cultural societies. We also encourage international cooperation of peers from Slovenia and abroad. In recent years, we have hosted young people from our neighbouring countries via the European Voluntary Service (video available here).

In a pleasant work atmosphere during the festival, our mentors will assist you in numerous areas of:

  • organising and producing cultural and educational programmes,
  • developing promotion and public relations,
  • taking care of international festival guests,
  • managing festival venues and logistics,
  • managing the festival camp,
  • photo and video documenting of the festival
  • assisting in the kitchen and many more.


A month before the festival, we will also be glad to receive your help in the following areas:

  • distribution of promotion materials,
  • writing short texts,
  • folding and enveloping promotional materials,
  • promotion of the festival.


The daily presence in Izola is necessary from May 30th until June 5th. During the festival, we offer you:

  • accommodation in the festival camp,
  • meals,
  • a festival pass affording you free entrance to all festival venues in your free time. 

If you want to cooperate with us, please send your application to our volunteer coordinator Natalija Gajič, e-mail natalija.gajic@isolacinema.org, by March 30th 2017. The application should also include:

  • a motivational letter,
  • a short CV,
  • a note if you have the time and the desire to cooperate only during the festival or only in a month before the festival or both.
