26 Apr Extended Deadline for Applications: British Sound Designer Paul Davies Joins FOCUS With the Masterclass
The deadline for the application of emerging editors and sound designers has been extended to 6 May 2018. The selected participants will also benefit from the rich film experiences of the British sound designer Paul Davies.
Paul Davies (UK) is a supervising sound editor and sound designer who works on a wide range of feature films and high end television dramas. Among the directors he has worked for are Lynne Ramsay, Stephen Frears, Yang Demange, Anton Corbijn and Steve McQueen, on films such as You Were Never Really Here (2017), We Need To Talk About Kevin (2012), Hunger (2008), The American (2010), The Queen (2006) and ’71 (2015). Paul is also a visiting tutor at the National Film and Television School in the UK and has taught at The Baltic Film and Media School, as well as conducting sound design workshops.
For all four days, the chosen participants from Croatia, Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia) and Slovenia, will be guided by trainers Dragan von Petrovic (Serbia) and Julij Zornik (Slovenia). Dragan von Petrovic is an editor and director of award-winning documentary and fiction films, guest lecturer and an editing doctor on documentaries and feature fiction films, and one of the founders of DOKSERBIA documentary association. Julij Zornik is a sound designer of over hundred short and animated, live-action and documentary films, recipient of several domestic and international awards, and the president of Slovenian Society of Post Production Artists.
Part of the FOCUS programme will be open to the broader professional public. The Masterclass by Paul Davies and Case Study of the film City of the Sun (2017) by Rati Oneli, which will be screened at the festival prior to that, will thus also be open to the holders of the festival PRO passes. On Friday afternoon, 8 June, there will be a public debate on key issues of editing and sound design and their role in the film industry, as well as a showcase of the 12 participants of PRO Otok: FOCUS on Film Editing and Sound Design, intended for the interested public, especially directors and producers.

The event starts on Wednesday, 6 June, and ends on Saturday, 9 June 2018. Participation in the FOCUS event is free-of-charge for selected candidates from Croatia, Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia)* and Slovenia. The workshop fee will be covered by the organizers and it includes accommodation, meals, and festival pass. It is essential for all participants to be fluent in English.
*FVG selected participants are requested to transfer the workshop fee of 780 EUR upon admittance and they will have a possibility to request a scholarship in the next FVG Audiovisual Fund training call for proposal (June 2018).
Who can apply?
- We are calling for emerging film editors from Croatia, Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia) and Slovenia with moderate previous filmmaking experience. A degree from a film academy is not obligatory, while an editing credit on at least two short films or one feature film is expected.

The deadline for applications is 6 May 2018. The participants selected by the committee consisting of the project team and the representatives of respective professional associations will be notified by e.mail and publicly announced by 18 May 2018. FOCUS, the second international training and networking event for emerging film professionals across Croatia, Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy) and Slovenia, will take place in Izola, Slovenia, during the 14th international film festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema. The FOCUS event will provide opportunities for participants to reflect on their own method, to learn from renowned senior colleagues, and to publicly showcase their vision through their work to the audience of directors and producers. Furthermore, it aims to spark cross-border co-production collaboration in the near future.
FOCUS is an original programme of Otok Institute and the first of its kind in the region, organized in collaboration/support of Croatian Audiovisual Centre, FVG Audiovisual Fund (Italy), Slovenian Film Centre, Motovila Institute / CED Slovenia, CED MEDIA Office Italy – Torino, CED MEDIA Office Croatia, Society of Post Production Artists (Slovenia) and The School of Sound (UK).
