PRO Otok: FOCUS on Cinematography and Production Design – EXTENDED DEADLINE TILL 1 MAY!

The call for applications to emerging cinematographers and production designers is extended till 1 May, the second trainer to the twelve selected participants will be revealed shortly!

The new three-day international training and networking event FOCUS that puts a spotlight on emerging film professionals from Croatia, Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy) and Slovenia, will take part during the 13th edition of Kino Otok – Isola Cinema International Film Festival. First edition of this long-term project will be dedicated to cinematography and production design; 12 participants will get an opportunity and time to think through their methods and visions with two trainers. In addition, their work will be presented to the audience of directors and producers from the region.

Christian Berger, the cinematography trainer, is a cinematographer, director, producer, and writer of numerous documentaries, made-for-TV films, and features. As a cinematographer, he has cooperated with such renowned directors as Michael Haneke, Luc Bondy, Wolfgang Glück, Stephen Gaghan, Amos Gitai, Peter Sehr and Marie-Noèlle, János Szász, Angelina Jolie, Virgil Widrich and Terrence Malick. He developed the new “CINE REFLECT LIGHTING SYSTEM Berger/Bartenbach” in collaboration with Bartenbach Lichtlabor. In addition to creating new esthetic possibilities for the camera, this system gives actors and directors unprecedented flexibility and freedom. Berger employed this system for the first time to some degree in The Piano Teacher and exclusively used it to shoot Haneke’s films Caché / Hidden, The White Ribbon, Nick Cassavetes’ The Notebook, Angelina Jolie’s By The Sea and others. He received an Oscar nomination for his work on The White Ribbon.

The FOCUS training and networking event, the first of its kind in the region, draws on a creative mix of talents and professional skill sets: screenwriters, directors and producers work closely together with cinematographers, production designers, editors, sound designers, makeup designers, costume designers and others.

The participants will enjoy three inspiring days of intense lectures, talks, public presentations, and individual feedback from trainers. The overall objective of the event is to facilitate a direct exchange of knowledge and experience among the 12 selected participants (2 cinematographers and 2 production designers per country), as well as to spark cross-border co-production collaboration in the near future. Furthermore, the FOCUS event will provide opportunities for participants to reflect on their own method, to learn from renowned senior colleagues, and to publicly showcase their vision through their work to the audience of directors and producers.
