PRO Otok Spotlight on Makeup and Costume Design

The 15th edition of the International Film Festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema, taking place this year between 5 and 9 June in Izola, brings a fresh selection of programme for film professionals and other interested public. Among internationally renowned experts who will share their experiences at PRO Otok is costume designer, Academy Award winner and a frequent collaborator with Ridley Scott, Janty Yates, as well as hair, makeup and special effects designer Tina Šubic Dodočić.

The majority of three PRO Otok sub-programmes – Slovenian Art Cinema Association, FOCUS on Makeup and Costume Design, and Kratka scena Scriptwriting Workshop will be open for all public, while some events are available with PRO accreditation.

FOCUS on Makeup and Costume Design

Special attention will be once more given to FOCUS, the training and networking event for less visible film professions. After two years of programmes for cinematographers, production designers, film editors, and sound designers, the three-year cyclical programme is rounded up with a spotlight on makeup and costume designers from the region. The event starts on Friday, 7 June, at 11.00, with the Masterclass by Janty Yates, Academy Award winner for costume design in Gladiator, who has collaborated with Ridley Scott, Michael Mann, Jean Jacques Arnaud, and Michael Winterbottom. At 15.00, Tina Šubic Dodočić will hold a workshop about the specifics in makeup and special effects design for diverse regional and international high-budget productions, such as projects with Ralph Fiennes and Johnny Depp. At 18.30 The day will conclude with Evening Ties, a networking dinner for accredited and festival guests.

On Saturday, 8 June, at 11.45, producer Danijel Hočevar and costume designer Monika Lorber will speak about coproduction work through the Case Study of one of awarded film at Berlinale, God Exists, Her Name is Petrunia, by Teona Strugar Mitrevska. The screening of the film will be at 10.00 in Art Cinema Odeon.

FOCUS events are designed not just for the above professions, but at the same time for directors, producers and other film professionals from the region, as they encourage filmmaking as a collaborative art form, which draws on a creative mix of close collaboration of talents and professional skill sets. They will enable an opportunity for a deeper understanding of the specifics and the needs of the professions involved.

On Thursday, 6 June, at 12.30, members of the Slovenian Art Cinema Association will present good practice examples in programming, film education programmes and promotion strategies as key audience development tools.

KRATKA SCENA SCRIPTWRITING WORKSHOP

On Saturday, 8 June, at 11.00, Scriptwriting workshop for short films Kratka scena and Otok are hosting the Croatian filmmaker Igor Bezinović, whose short documentaries and sort-of documentaries are well-known to audiences in Slovenia. His latest feature A Brief Excursion (2017) was shown at Otok just before winning the Golden Arena for best film in Pula. From a personal perspective, Igor will talk about the importance of preparation when making short films and about the benefits of adapting your ideas to the world around you.

Film professionals can purchase a PRO Pass that offers a pass to all film projections and the networking dinner. PRO Pass can be purchased only at the main Festival Box Office at Izola Tourist Information Centre (TIC Izola, Ljubljanska ulica 17, working hours 10.00-19.00, from 5 June) only after it has been approved by the festival PRO staff.
